Tiny breaks or cracks in the skin, (especially when the skin is wet) allow the virus to enter the body. As the skin cells become infected, they multiply. The tiny black dots are small capillaries which have formed a clot.
Therapies to treat verrucae aim to destroy the infected top layer of tissue. Some verrucae are more resistant to treatment than others, which is why different methods are often tried to prevent reoccurrence. They often require multiple treatments to eliminate them.
