Achilles Tendinopathy

Achilles Tendonitis | Pain in the Achilles Tendons

Is it time to see a Podiatrist?

Achilles tendinopathy refers to irritation or degeneration of the Achilles tendon, the large tendon
that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. The Achilles tendon plays a key role in walking,
running, and jumping by helping the foot push off during movement.

When excessive strain is placed on the tendon, pain and stiffness may develop along the back
of the heel or lower leg.

Common Symptoms

People with Achilles tendinopathy may notice:

  • Pain along the back of the heel or lower calf
  • Stiffness in the Achilles tendon, particularly in the morning
  • Pain during walking, running, or climbing stairs
  • Tenderness along the tendon
  • Swelling or thickening of the tendon

Symptoms may develop gradually and often worsen with activity.

Why It Develops

Achilles tendinopathy usually develops due to repeated strain on the tendon.
Contributing factors may include:

Sudden increases in physical activity
Tight calf muscles
Reduced ankle mobility
Foot mechanics affecting tendon loading
Training on hard surfaces
Foot posture and walking mechanics may influence the forces acting on the Achilles tendon during movement.

Assessment and Diagnosis

At Absolute Footcare, Achilles tendon problems are assessed through a gait and biomechanical
assessment.

This allows us to evaluate how the foot and ankle function during walking and whether
mechanical factors may be contributing to strain on the tendon.

Treatments

Treatment depends on the underlying cause identified during your assessment.

Possible treatments may include:

Custom Orthotics
Rehabilitation exercises
Shockwave therapy
Biomechanical and Gait analysis
Footwear Advice

Book a Gait and Biomechanical Assessment

If you are experiencing persistent pain along the Achilles tendon, the best first step is to arrange
a gait and biomechanical assessment.
