Knee Pain

Pain or Discomfort in or around the Knee

Is it time to see a Podiatrist?

Knee pain is a common musculoskeletal complaint and may develop as a result of injury,
overuse, or changes in movement patterns within the lower limb. The knee joint plays a central
role in weight transfer during walking, running, and other physical activities

Pain may arise from structures within the knee itself or from mechanical factors affecting how
the lower limb functions during movement.

Common Symptoms

People experiencing knee pain may notice:

  • Pain around the front of the knee
  • Pain beneath or around the kneecap
  • Pain during walking, running, or climbing stairs
  • Stiffness or discomfort after activity
  • Tenderness around the knee joint

Possible Causes

Knee pain may occur for several reasons. Common causes include

Patellar tendinopathy
Patellofemoral pain syndrome
Iliotibial band irritation
Meniscal irritation
Osteoarthritis
In some cases, the way the foot and lower limb function during walking may also influence forces acting on the knee joint. Factors such as excessive pronation, flat feet, or altered gait mechanics may contribute to knee discomfort.

Assessment and Diagnosis

At Absolute Footcare, lower limb pain including knee discomfort may be assessed through a
gait and biomechanical assessment.

This allows us to evaluate how the foot, ankle, and lower limb move during walking and whether
mechanical factors may be contributing to stress on the knee joint.

We use a Footscan pressure plate system to analyse how pressure is distributed across the foot
during walking and how this may influence movement through the lower limb.

Treatments

Treatment depends on the underlying cause identified during your assessment.

Possible treatments may include:

Custom Orthotics
Rehabilitation exercises
Shockwave therapy
Footwear Advice
