Calf Pain

Pain or Discomfort in any part of the Calf

Is it time to see a Podiatrist?

Calf pain can occur for several reasons and may develop during physical activity or gradually
over time. The calf muscles play an important role in walking, running, and absorbing forces
through the lower limb.

Tightness, overuse, or altered biomechanics may place increased strain on the calf muscles and
the Achilles tendon.

Common Symptoms

People experiencing calf pain may notice:

  • Tightness in the calf muscles
  • Pain during walking or running
  • Discomfort when pushing off during movement
  • Tenderness in the calf
  • Reduced flexibility in the lower leg

Symptoms may vary depending on which structures of the foot are affected.

Possible Causes

Calf pain may develop due to several factors including

Achilles tendinopathy
Muscle strain or overuse
Reduced ankle mobility
Altered gait mechanic
Increased load during physical activity
Tight calf muscles may also increase strain on structures in the foot, including the plantar fascia

Assessment and Diagnosis

At Absolute Footcare, calf pain related to foot and lower limb mechanics is assessed through a
gait and biomechanical assessment.

This allows us to evaluate how movement patterns and joint mobility may be contributing to
increased strain in the calf muscles.

Treatments

Treatment depends on the underlying cause identified during your assessment.

Possible treatments may include:

Rehabilitation exercises to improve calf flexibility
Custom orthotics to improve lower limb mechanics
Shockwave therapy
Footwear Advice

Book a Gait and Biomechanical Assessment

If you are experiencing ongoing foot pain, the best first step is to book a gait and biomechanical
assessment so the underlying cause can be identified.
